  4. Neptune, the eighth planet of the
  5. Solar System, is built like a giant gas
  6. ball more than 17 times the size of
  7. Earth. It consists largely of hydro-
  8. gen, helium and methane; since
  9. methane absorbs red light, the planet
  10. has a luminescent blue color.
  11.      Voyager 2 flew past Neptune in
  12. 1989 and discovered a great oval
  13. spot, similar to the one found on
  14. Jupiter. The cloud formation is about
  15. the size of earth.  Voyager also dis-
  16. covered six new moons, in addition
  17. to the two that were known. It pho-
  18. tographed a large, Grand Canyon-
  19. like fault on the surface of the moon
  20. of Triton.
  21.       Neptune was Voyager 2' s last
  22. encounter.  In August of 1989, it left
  23. the Solar System to probe into the
  24. depths of interstellar space.
